Interesting that students with a foundation in SEL scored higher on standardized tests. I wonder if more students had this kind of foundation in the primary grades would we see a decrease bullying behaviors at the secondary level?
The evidence suggests you can teach almost anything including social skills and behavior. SJT
ReplyDeleteYes, it is possible to teach anything. I wonder what students learn when the teacher gets out of the way but sets up the right conditions for learning. There was an interesting study (called the "Hole in the Wall" experiment) done out of India where a researcher put a computer, a keyboard and a mouse in villages where students had never had access to such devices and he video taped what they did. Turns out they were able to teach themselves how to use the computer and how to surf the web. Check it out at http://www.hole-in-the-wall.com/abouthiwel.html .
